Alternatives disposable cups in education

Coffee cups and meal containers create the largest waste stream at schools.

Starting July 1, you'll pay extra for disposable cups and trays made (in part) with plastic. But how much should such cups cost before students start bringing their own reusable cups? Reuse must become the norm if we want to get rid of the single-use plastic that dominates the world and to which we have become addicted. However, there could be many more incentives for students to switch to reusable containers. At Retulp, we think it is positive when educational institutions make sustainable choices. In doing so, they inspire their students and pupils to make a more sustainable choice.

Retulp thinks pricing disposable plastic items is a good step. In addition, reuse should be facilitated and promoted much more, for example by not restricting schoolchildren who want to use their own cups or trays. After all, the ultimate goal is to completely abandon disposable plastic. Retulp has had the opportunity to print reusable coffee cups and travel mugs for a large number of schools and educational institutions such as: Leiden University, Avans Hogeschool, Hogeschool Gent, ArtEZ University of the Arts, Utrecht University, Alba Academy, Stichtse Vrije School and ROC Mondriaan. Below are some examples of suitable and scalable solutions for reuse in an educational institution.

ICLON Leiden University

The ICLON provides university courses to become secondary school teachers. In the process, they also ensure that students and from primary and secondary schools are introduced to science and conduct scientific research on education. In short, they educate educators who can inspire younger generations on sustainability. With Retulp travelcups and Retulp Tumbler tea cups with the logo of Leiden University, a nice sustainable example is set.

Christian Lyceum Veenendaal lets teachers lead by example

"Movement did bring the Tumbler, which we give to all our employees at Christelijk Lyceum Veenendaal,: the consumption of disposable cups has drastically decreased," said the rector director of CLV." The Retulp Tumbler is ideal for use in a busy school. You also immediately set a good sustainable example with a reusable cup. Exactly what fits into their mission to: collaborate, learn and discover.

Hotelschool The Hague sustainability challenge

In addition to a diverse program for its students, Hotelschool The Hague has launched the Sustainable Hospitality Challenge. Sustainability is the central theme of this challenge. This year, the school wanted to give all colleagues a sustainable gift, choosing Retulp travelcups. In addition, they encourage students to put their empty bottles in special bins. The proceeds will be donated to the Plastic Soup Foundation.

Erasmus University Rotterdam all about reusable cups by the end of 2022

Paper and plastic cups have already been banned in office spaces since the end of 2022. All office spaces are now equipped with reusable coffee cups, sustainable mugs and tea glasses. So teachers have been the first to set a good example.

Bring your own cup Maastricht University

No cardboard or plastic cups for coffee, tea and water since May 2023, encouraging students and staff to use their own reusable cup or mug. Cups for students and staff can also be purchased at the coffee bar. This saves them more than 115,000 disposable cups a year.

Avans University of Applied Sciences goes for less packaging

The dot on the horizon is set: in 2030 Avans University of Applied Sciences will be a circular school with at least 90 percent recyclable waste streams. To achieve that goal, they will be making even more circular purchases in the coming years and reducing residual and litter. In particular, less packaging and replacing disposable cups with reusable cups and containers should contribute to this goal.

Agnieten College Zwartsluis

Since the new building in 2014, brightly colored reusable cups have been in use for staff, students have mostly received a reusable bottle from school to use at the water tap in the school's auditorium. Plastic plates have also been replaced with ceramic plates. And as an exam gift in recent years a Retulp reusable bottle with Agnieten logo is given. Step by step, disposable items are being worked out of the school.

In Germany, usually disposable cups are already further along in banishment

Back in 1994, the German city of Freiburg launched the "Freiburg Cup" project, introducing reusable cups at public events, such as festivals, schools and sports competitions. People could buy cups at the entrance and use them during the event. After use, they could return the cup and get their deposit back or keep the cup as a souvenir.
