Political support necessary for switch to reusable packaging

More than thirty civil society organizations and companies, including Retulp, have called on the Dutch government to support the standardization of reusable packaging. In a joint appeal, Retulp joins these organizations in emphasizing the need for political action to promote reusable packaging. We point out the environmental, economic and public health benefits. Without active government involvement, the move to reusable packaging will not succeed on a large scale. Reusable packaging is essential to reduce the growing mountain of waste and reduce carbon emissions. This initiative, led by Mission Reuse, Natuur & Milieu, and Enviu, calls on the government to create the right conditions for widespread adoption of reusable packaging in the Netherlands.

The need for reuse

The call comes at an important time, just after Dutch Overshoot Day, a day that demonstrates that we are consuming our natural resources too quickly. Disposable packaging, such as plastic cups, bottles and trays, contribute enormously to this problem. Although disposable cups and plastic containers have been banned for on-site use since January 2024, many catering establishments and sports clubs are struggling to make the switch to reusable alternatives. Political support is therefore essential to ensure that reusable packaging truly becomes the norm.

Benefits of reusable packaging

Reusable packaging offers numerous benefits:

  • Strong market position: the Netherlands can lead the way in this sustainable development.
  • Reduced dependence: Reduced dependence on raw materials from other countries.
  • Less litter: Significantly less litter in nature and cities.
  • Lower CO2 emissions: Less production and transportation of packaging reduces CO2 emissions.
  • Cost savings: Reduced cleanup and disposal costs for government and businesses.

What is the government's role in reusable packaging?

The government should set clear rules for reusable packaging, and this should apply to all types of packaging, not just plastic. Companies that choose to reuse should receive financial support. It is also important that reusable packaging systems are hygienic, affordable and user-friendly, so that consumers can easily use them. The 2024 NTA 8515, which provides guidelines for the design and cleaning of reusable plastic cups, is agreed upon. This standard is essential to ensure a safe and efficient system.

Political action is essential to make reusable packaging a success. By working together and focusing on reuse, the Netherlands can not only reduce its environmental impact, but also play a leading role in the transition to a circular economy. Now is the time to act and make the future more sustainable. Read the full call to the House of Representatives here.
