What are microplastics and how do they form?
Microplastics, a word we have been hearing more and more lately. And let's get right to the point; not in a positive sense. Microplastics are starting to become a clear environmental and public health problem. So it's time to try to combat this source of pollution. And it can be done! Because a recent study by TNO has shown that a 70% reduction is certainly achievable!
Perhaps first a brief explanation of what microplastics are. Microplastics are created when plastic decays. Of course, plastic hardly decays, but over a very long period of time it does slowly break down into very small particles. These are all pieces smaller than half a centimeter, but more often they are not even visible to the naked eye. In addition, microplastics are also added to a lot of products for everyday use. Consider personal care products such as exfoliating creams. When used, the microparticles wash away with wastewater and eventually end up in our oceans. By the way, the largest sources of microplastics in the Netherlands are car tires, agricultural plastic and packaging!
The annoying thing about microplastics is that they really do get into the environment everywhere. Not just in the oceans. The largest amounts of microplastics can be found in the soil. But they are also already found in our bodies. This can cause health problems, so it is important to do something about it.
The very first action you as a consumer can take is "Refuse. This means refusing excess packaging, which also means refusing that disposable cup on the road and bringing your own mug. Not bringing your lunch to work in a plastic bag from now on, but in a sustainable lunchbox. This small change in your routine will save you a lot of unnecessary plastics on a yearly basis! And if you cannot avoid using plastic, opt for a deposit or make sure you recycle properly.
If you want to avoid putting microplastics on your skin, there is an app you can download that allows you to scan all your products: beat the microbead. This allows you to scan every product already in the store and then choose a product without microplastics! By making choices like this, we end up forcing personal care product manufacturers to modify their products!
And you may think that if you adjust your behavior and go out with your sustainable cup that you are just a drop in the bucket. But, be aware that many drops of water can eventually make a hole in a stone. Your example can inspire someone else to do their part too. And before you know it, that one drop has become an ocean!
