What is a BPA free water bottle?

BPA free water bottle

How many plastic bottles do you use? You might be surprised to learn that a person uses an average of 150 (plastic) PET bottles per year. Converted, this is almost three bottles a week. Did you know that by using a plastic PET bottle every day you are ingesting a small amount of chemicals, you don't want that, do you? Yet this is the case. This is because PET bottles contain the chemical BPA, but what is that anyway?

BPA, also known as Bisphenol A, is a chemical used in the coating of some food and beverage containers to protect food from bacterial contamination and extend shelf life. For example, BPA is also found in PET bottles. When you use a (reusable) plastic bottle for an extended period of time or when the bottle gets hot the coating loosens allowing chemicals to end up in your water.

Why prevent BPA with a BPA free water bottle?

Research has shown that small amounts of this chemical are not bad for your health. According to the Dutch Nutrition Center, however, it is harmful when you ingest too much BPA. Bisphenol A (BPA) has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, miscarriage, breast and prostate cancer, reproductive dysfunction, metabolic dysfunction and diabetes, and neurological and behavioral disorders. However, this only occurs at exposures higher than the standards set by Europe.

The differences and similarities between biobased plastic, bio-degredable plastic and bioplastic

There are several types of bioplastics that can serve as alternatives to the well-known PET bottle. The terms biobased plastic, biodegradable plastic and bioplastic are often confused, yet they are different. Biobased plastic products are made from a renewable resource such as sugarcane. When we talk about biodegradable plastic, we are talking about plastic that is broken down by microorganisms. This can be done by natural putrefaction, for example. Another name for biodegradable plastic is biodegradable plastic. With both biobased and biodegradable plastic, we are talking about bioplastics.
