Week without Waste: avoid disposable plastic
This week (May 22 to May 28, 2023) is once again the Week Without Waste. Each year we produce as much as 490 kilograms of waste per person. In this week, people are challenged to make a small switch in their lifestyle to create less waste. Because everyone can contribute to less waste, it doesn't even take much madness.
Bring your own is an important pillar. Of course at Retulp we immediately think of a coffee mug for on the go and a bottle for your tap water. But also think about lunch boxes so you no longer use plastic bags. There is more you can do in this area! Do you pick up food often? Try bringing your own containers. This is already becoming more common, so you probably won't be the first to ask at your favorite takeout restaurant! Grocery shopping? Bring reusable bags for your fruits and vegetables when you go to the supermarket. It may take some getting used to at first, but after a while it becomes very common. At a lot of to-go companies, you even get a discount if you have your own mug filled. Profit for you and profit for the environment!
Another area where there is a lot to gain is the wardrobe.... The clothing industry is a very big polluter. This industry creates more emissions every year than international air and shipping combined. So it is definitely worth giving some extra thought to your closet. Buying something new is of course fun, but nowadays there is also a lot of beautiful second-hand clothing for sale. It saves money, and you can find real gems that no one else has. You can also sell clothes you no longer wear yourself or donate them to the thrift store. And of course, if it's really broken you throw it in the textile bin!
The last point we want to address in this blog is food waste. Every year we throw away about 9% of our food without having used it! Think of food that we overbuy ourselves, but also the so-called bruisers. You know them, the crooked cucumbers, tomatoes that are not nicely round and carrots that look like siamese twins. Ok, you can't control the latter, but you can control how much food you throw in the green bin. We'd like to give you a few tips to reduce this.
Do your shopping when you're not hungry! Saves a lot of money and you don't buy anything you didn't need. Extra plus: you take home less unhealthy things. And let that often just be the products that have extra packaging and therefore waste. THT exceeded? Depending on the product, you don't have to throw it away right away. Especially dry foods can last longer than the packaging says!
This is a small sample of the small changes you could make during the Week Without Waste. Will you take up the challenge and help create less waste too?
