Buying the ideal thermos or thermos cup

What do you all need to look out for?

Thermos bottles come in all colors, sizes and brands. Which one is best? When you take a walk through the winter cold, a cup of hot and steaming coffee or tea is a wonderful reward. With a thermos, you always have hot drinks with you. But what should you look for when you want to buy a good and convenient thermos?

How does a thermos work?

The double wall of the bottle keeps the contents warm. Between the two walls there is vacuum drawn air. As a result, the contents of the thermos do not come into contact with the temperature outside the bottle. This also applies to heat, so you can also use a thermos to keep your drinks cool in the summer.

What is the best material for a thermos or thermos cup?

A good thermos or mug will lose as little heat as possible and keep your drink at temperature even after a few hours of hiking. The best thermos bottles are made of stainless steel (SS). This material insulates well and is also easy to clean.

A large or small thermos, what is the right size?

Thermos bottles come in a variety of sizes. The larger the bottle, the more weight you have to carry. Buy a bottle with a capacity that is just enough for you. Of course, this depends on how long you will be hiking and how many people will be using the thermos. For a short train ride, a 350 ml thermos cup is usually sufficient and they come in many brands such as, for example: Mepal, Dopper, Retulp, Mizu and Klean Kanteen. For a long mountain trek, for example, choose the XL 1200 ml Adventure thermos from Retulp Or a large thermos of Contigo. The most common size is a 500 ml bottle.

A twist-top or drinking spout which convenience do you want?

Of course, the water bottle must not leak. Nothing more annoying than coffee or tea among the stuff in your bag. Furthermore, ease of use is also an aspect to consider when buying. There are thermos bottles with a twist cap or with a push button. During a test of thermos flasks by the TV program Kassa a few years ago, it turned out that the traditional twist-top insulates better than the push-button. A push button, on the other hand, is more practical to use because you don't have to hold a loose cap while pouring. Just make sure the drink in the bottle is not too hot. A good example of a push-button drinking bottle is the Click&Go Thermos Cup.

A cheap or expensive bottle, what is a right price for a thermos?

There are significant price differences between thermos: you can have a thermos for less than 10 euros, while the most expensive ones cost around 70 euros. At Retulp are many different types of possible thermos cups and thermos bottles in the web shop. The price of a thermos bottle is determined by its size and functionality. Generally, branded bottles from A-brands such as Mizu, 24bottles, Retulp, Chillies and Dopper somewhat more expensive than unbranded thermos bottles.

Research and testing on thermos cups and thermos flasks

All sorts of research and testing has been done on thermos flasks, and travel mugs. Some tests focus on ease of use, othersn on durability and in some tests again considering the method of cleaning. Hhe is difficult to name the best tested cup or drinking bottle. In general, the Dutch brands Dopper, Mepal and Retulp and the foreign brands Contigo, Kambukka and Camelbag very good.
