Zero waste at school: avoid disposable plastic
There are those things that really make you happy for a moment. We had that when the school of the daughter of one of our employees indicated they wanted to become a zero waste school. Fantastic initiative! Because by teaching the new generation now about the importance of preventing waste you are working doubly on the future. But zero waste at school, how do you do that?
At the Koninklijke Scholengemeenschap in Apeldoorn, they have started placing bins that allow students to easily separate their waste. They want to produce 50% less waste in one year. To achieve this, parents are also urged to take a critical look at what they give their children to school. In doing so, the use of a lunch box and reusable bottle is encouraged. And, of course, students are also made aware of waste and waste prevention during lessons.
Even for school, you can very well prepare and bring your own delicious lunch and/or snacks. Smaller snacks are easily and lightly packed in a bee wrap. These cotton wraps are coated with beeswax (there are also vegan options available). You simply fold them around your snack. The small size means your snack will always fit somewhere in that heavy school bag! Just rinse the wraps after use and then they are ready for the next round!
For the packed lunch, then of course choose a lunch box instead of a sandwich bag. Tip: look for one that suits your child's eating preferences. It may take some getting used to, but the food really tastes better than from a plastic bag. Drinking, of course, is fine in a durable bottle. There is plenty of choice in that area, so for everyone there is a nice bottle that you would like to be seen with.
The school cafeteria, of course, is always another challenge of a completely different order. A lot of schools have made their school cafeterias a lot healthier in recent years. Now it is time to make the move to more sustainable. This means offering less pre-packaged food. If there really is no other way, then of course choose sustainably packaged products. But we are convinced that if healthier has succeeded, less waste will!
