WWF plastic free oceans project
Last week we received the annual report from one of the projects we care about and support. The Plastic Free Oceans Project of the World Wildlife Fund.
On the one hand, a report that at first does not make you happy. For example, 90% of seabirds ingested plastic and 52% of sea turtles did. Then studies have shown negative effects of plastic in 90% of the marine animals studied. Add to this the prospect that the plastic problem in the oceans will have quadrupled by 2050, and your spirits will drop.
Fortunately, there are bright spots in this Plastic Free Oceans Project report. WWF has managed to create dozens of trash barriers in rivers in Indonesia. A shelter for injured marine animals that have plastic in their stomachs has also been established. There has also been close contact with youth movements such as Bye Bye Plastic Bag and a focus on education about the harmful effects of plastic waste. Plan is to support the Philippines and Malaysia in reducing their plastic waste over the next 3 years.
Dit soort resultaten stemt ons dan toch wel enigszins positief. We realiseren ons natuurlijk heel goed dat dit nog maar een begin is en dat er echt nog veel meer nodig is. Daarom blijft Retulp de inspanningen van het WWF steunen. Ook de komende jaren in Maleisië en op de Filippijnen. Samen kunnen we meer, dus steun jij het WWF ook?
