REALLY TRUE

Thanks to this store, over 3.5 million disposables have been saved

The plastic problem in getting bigger and bigger. Almost everywhere we store or buy groceries we encounter products in plastic packaging. The Dutch use 26 billion pieces of plastic food packaging every year. Per Dutchman, that amounts to more than 1,500 pieces of plastic, which translates to four per day.

Over the years, we have become increasingly aware of the plastic problem. As a result, we see more and more initiatives to address the plastic problem. While shopping, we see product packaging disappearing or being reduced. There is a deposit on cans and more and more plastic is being collected and recycled. Unfortunately, this does not solve the problem. As much as 91 percent of plastic is not recycled.

Billions of tons of plastic have been made in recent decades, and much of it is processed as waste.

And that's not all. Plastic takes more than 400 years to break down, so most of it still exists in one form or another. This is very frightening.

Progress

On the other hand, we also see great things happening. More and more companies are looking for alternatives and are active in raising awareness. One of Retulp's partners is WAAR. With 24 stores and a webshop, WAAR provides products with a beautiful story that are made with love and care. Thanks to the partnership of WAAR and Retulp, 347,936 disposables were prevented in 2020 alone and 838,400 liters of water were donated. In total, by offering Retulp as an alternative, WAAR has already prevented 3,695,824 single-use plastics, we are proud of that!
