Feb. 15, 2021, the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has advised that melamine plastic dinnerware incorporating bamboo and/or corn fibers should no longer be used. This is because, according to NVWA research, the combination of melamine plastic and bamboo sometimes releases too high a concentration of the substance formaldehyde. And this would exceed the health standard. Reason enough for the NVWA to ban these products. But what about the bamboo products from Retulp?

The Retulp Bambu thermos is a thermos cup whose exterior, with the exception of the cap, is made of bamboo. This gives the bottle a robust and natural look. But it doesn't stop there. In fact, the inside is made of recycled stainless steel, making it BPA-free and food-safe. This also applies to the Retulp Urban drinking bottles and thermos cups of which only the outside of the cap is made of bamboo. Stainless steel is safe and durable for use as a drinking bottle. For example, the nutrition center (voedingscentrum.nl) has indicated to go for products made of stainless steel, among other things, as an alternative to melamine plastic tableware. So no reason to worry.

But what about our Retulp Ecobox? The Retulp lunchbox has a sturdy bamboo lid and the container is made of bamboo fibers. However, these bamboo fibers are combined with Polypropylene (PP) and not the melamine plastic that the NVWA is talking about. In addition, all items are tested for migration of toxic substances before they are purchased. Because melamine plastic is known to be a hazardous substance, the products are also tested for its migration. None of our products contain this melamine plastic.
