Retulp wants to make even more of a difference in the fight against plastic pollution by 2025. Our goal: to greatly reduce disposable plastic such as drinking bottles, plastic bags and packaging bags. The so-called plastic soup in the sea continues to grow, and the impact on nature, animals and our food chain is worrying. We believe the first step lies in prevention. Throw away less, reuse more. After all, prevention is much, much better than recycling - and also much more effective.
Why it's still urgent in 2026 and 2027
More and more plastic is floating in our oceans and seas. Weathering, sunlight and wave action cause it to break down into microplastics, which are then eaten by fish, seabirds and even plankton. The ocean covers 72% of the earth's surface, is an important source of oxygen and a primary source of food for billions of people. If we do not take action by 2025, plastic pollution will further damage this crucial function. Plastic does not digest and releases harmful substances. Most litter comes from the land - through streets, roadsides, rivers and eventually the sea. Even on land itself, plastic has a disastrous impact on animals and ecosystems.
Facts that show why action in 2026 and 2027 is more urgent than ever:
- About 80% of all marine waste comes from land.
- Only 1% of plastic worldwide is recycled.
- About 50% of all plastic is immediately thrown away after a single use.
- In some ocean areas, there is 36x more plastic than plankton.
- Every year, 1,000,000 seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die from plastic in the sea.
- About 36% of all consumer fish contains plastic.
- Litter often comes from recreational users, traffic participants and young people.
- Much waste is found along highways, parking lots and in natural areas.
What you can do in 2026 - and hopefully no longer need to do in 2027
Using reusable alternatives is one of the most powerful choices you can make. Think refillable drink bottles, reusable lunch boxes, shopping bags and pouches made from sustainable materials. By using these daily, you are structurally reducing your own plastic footprint.
In the Netherlands we are lucky to have top quality tap water - cheap, healthy and environmentally friendly. If everyone drinks tap water more often instead of buying plastic bottles of water, we will save mountains of unnecessary plastic per day by 2025. Retulp makes reuse attractive, smart and impactful.
