CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE

To invest in children is to invest in the future. Sustainable parenting is the solution.

Might sound crazy, but it's not. In view of the plastic soup, increasing forest fires and violent storms, it seems logical that not only we, but also the next generation, should change this. So raising your children sustainably is important for both your child's future and the earth.

What is sustainable parenting?

Sustainable parenting is about making your child aware of your choices regarding the environment. And by setting them a good example. Of course, sustainability is a comprehensive concept and sometimes you don't know where to start.

4 tips for sustainable parenting

Go for a vegetarian meal

Years ago, it was almost not done if you didn't eat meat. Fortunately, that is over and people are no longer surprised. Meat is a huge burden on the environment and it makes all the difference if you choose a vegetarian meal once or twice a week. So it is important to teach children that a meal can also be tasty without meat. For example, swap the chicken burger for a vegetarian version and ask them afterwards if they realized it wasn't really meat. I bet they didn't realize anything. The alternatives are so good these days that you don't even have to miss the taste of meat.

Good habits

Teach your children that water from the tap tastes just as good as that from a plastic bottle. By using a reusable drinking or thermos bottle yourself, you set a good example for others and show that single-use plastic is outrageous. For example, provide lunch in a nice lunch box instead of a plastic bag and go for a cup of drink instead of a small packet. These days there are also reusable straws in all kinds of colors and materials, much nicer than the plastic variety.

But also recycling trash and taking a bike instead of a car are all habits that will most likely be adopted by children.

Go for quality

Try to choose quality when buying toys, for example. Plastic shovels and sand molds are cheap, but they also break down quickly and are also bad for the environment. Choose toys made of wood or other sustainable materials.

Sustainable entertainment

Show a video of Greta Thunberg or find other great videos about sustainability. This way you can show that working for a cleaner environment and sustainable living is not at all dull. However, it is important that you choose movies that are appropriate for your child's age. Therefore, do not show movies about animal suffering but, for example, take a trip to the petting zoo or petting zoo. This has a positive influence on children.

So sustainable parenting really doesn't have to be difficult, but with a few small changes you can make all the difference.

Answer questions about the environment honestly, but always positively. After all, it is their future.
