What is BPA and what does BPA-free mean?

BPA stands for Bisphenol A, which is a synthetic chemical widely used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins since the 1960s. It is mostly used to strengthen plastic, but is also found in toiletries, household electronics and purchase receipts.
